This workshop provides participants with foundational knowledge of fat oppression, fat liberation, thin privilege, anti-fatness as anti-Blackness, healthism and other related concepts. Rooted in fat folks’ lived experience, this training encourages participants to examine their anti-fat biases through an intersectional, antiracist lens as they build their capacity to practice critical, self-reflexive empathy vis a vis fatness and fat people. This interactive workshop will set participants up to recognize anti-fatness and to begin interrogating it within themselves and in their work with clients.

In order to be effective in providing psychotherapy to clients who live in fat bodies, I believe it is imperative that therapists learn about fat lived experience and begin to interrogate their own anti-fat biases.
Grappling with our anti-fatness is a process. This journey, though often uncomfortable, promises that we will feel more grounded in our work with clients who live in larger bodies. Anti-fatness is the status quo in our field (and in the world at large); as such, we must make a deliberate effort to challenge anti-fat beliefs. In so doing, we can begin to ground ourselves and our work in Fat Liberation principles, which assert that people deserve safety, dignity and to live full lives regardless of their body size.
Join us for this full-day, interactive workshop and make the first steps toward becoming a fat-positive psychotherapist. I look forward to collaborating with you as you do this important work, and I offer ongoing consultation to therapists after the workshop ends.
In addition to providing a holding space in which therapists can begin to examine their own anti-fat beliefs and how these can show up in the therapeutic relationship, this workshop will cover the following:
Assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning: anti-fat vs. fat-positive approaches
Anti-fat trauma and its impact on fat folks’ minds, bodies, and nervous systems
Case examples
Ideas + verbiage to begin applying these principles in your work with clients right away
Size privilege dynamics in the therapy relationship
Unique challenges fat therapists face working with clients of all body sizes
